“You look lovely in this costume.” Rowan studied the portion of her face exposed beneath her mask. He couldn’t get over how different she looked, yet he recognized every nuance in her luminous dark eyes.
“Thank you.” Her gaze held his for a moment and an uncertain smile flitted over her glossy red lips, before she lowered her lashes.
“Did you just get here?”
“I’ve been here for a while.” Her slender shoulders lifted. “Lurking at the other end of the ballroom. I guess you didn’t notice me.”
“I find it hard to imagine not noticing you. And I can’t help thinking something about you is familiar,” he added mildly. “What’s your name?”
The edges of her mouth twitched in hesitation. “Tonight I’m a mystery woman.”
